Three Lesser-Known Bob Dylan Facts

Since 2013, Jonathan (Jon) David has served as the CEO of Tapstone Holdings, LLC. When he is not working, Jonathan David enjoys listening to Bob Dylan

Dylan has largely remained an enigma through his decades-spanning career. Here are three-lesser known facts about Dylan.

1. Hammond’s Folly - Bob Dylan was first signed to Columbia records after producer John H. Hammond heard Dylan playing harmonica on a record from Carolyn Hester. Though Hammond’s boss and Columbia’s vice president chided Dylan’s voice as being the worst thing he’d ever heard, Hammond signed Dylan anyway. After Dylan's first album was considered a commercial flop, the hire came to be known as "Hammond's Folly," though the producer’s faith eventually paid off. Hammond is also responsible for signing such legends as Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, Leonard Cohen, and Billie Holiday.

2. Holden Caulfield - Though Dylan starred in the unsuccessful 1987 film Hearts of Fire, he almost got his first leading role decades earlier. An agent from MCA approached John H. Hammond in 1962, saying he thought Dylan would be perfect for the role of Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye, for which the studio owned the rights. The film, and consequently Dylan’s role in it, never came to fruition.

3. “House of the Rising Sun” - One of the songs on Dylan’s self-titled first album is the classic “House of the Rising Sun.” Dylan learned the particular arrangement he used for the song from Dave Van Ronk, another, often-overlooked, folk musician. However, Dylan didn’t ask Van Ronk’s permission to use that version until after he already did it. Van Ronk eventually had to stop playing the song, tired of people thinking he got it from Dylan. Dylan himself ended up doing the same thing when The Animals released their popular version of the song.

Volunteering for the House of Ruth Los Angeles

Jonathan “Jon” David is the CEO of Tapstone Holdings, LLC, where he has launched over 100 successful advertising campaigns since 2013. Aside from work, Jonathan David supports the efforts of the House of Ruth Los Angeles, a nonprofit organization whose aim is to assist families and individuals dealing with domestic violence.

One of the many ways to help the House of Ruth is to volunteer for the charity. Those who volunteer for the House of Ruth must first complete a state-mandated 40-hour training course on working with individuals who have experienced domestic violence. The training is crucial, as it helps volunteers complete their wide variety of tasks within the organization. Volunteers often answer calls for the group’s 24-hour hotline, accompany clients to court, assist in child care, help clients who need temporary restraining orders, and more.

If none of these roles sounds like a good fit, the organization offers a number of alternative ways to contribute. Aside from donating, other ways to help include sponsoring your own fundraising drive, holding a garage or bake sale to raise funds, or volunteering your professional expertise at the organization’s office or one of their board committees.

House of Ruth Offers Help to People Who are Homeless in Los Angeles

Jonathan David’s Tapstone Holdings focuses on creating effective marketing plans and media buys. As the CEO, Jonathan David operates Tapstone Holdings on a basis of mutual respect with his clients. Jon David’s charitable giving includes the House of Ruth in Los Angeles.

The House of Ruth’s vision statement promotes independence and stability for homeless women, including those in abusive relationships. It accomplishes this by finding temporary, transitional, and permanent housing for them and their children.

Many agencies address the problem of homelessness by providing two weeks of shelter with little follow-up. However, the House of Ruth offers an approach that is aimed to prevent families from needing to return to shelters.

The organization believes in providing a range of services that go beyond sheltering, such as supportive programs and an aftercare program. The agency addresses mental health issues, child care, crisis counseling, and life skills development. Most importantly, the House of Ruth establishes a peer atmosphere, in which people who have overcome homelessness share their hope and strength.

This process has proven to be successful. Fully 95% of the families served by the House of Ruth remain housed for the long term.
